It is with sadness that I have to announce the passing of Mike McDermott

It is with sadness that I have to announce the passing of Mike McDermott, who died earlier this week after a long illness. For over 50 years he had been an integral part of the club, serving in many capacities, both official and unofficial. He exemplified the term ‘volunteer’ and was one of those individuals who forms the backbone of any amateur club; the sort of person without whom such organisations would not function.

Mike joined Heaton Moor in the 1960s and at the end of that decade became 3rd XV captain (called the Extra A XV in those days). He then went on to serve in various other roles; Membership Secretary, Subscriptions Secretary, Chairman of House & Grounds, Publicity Officer, Fixture Secretary and Chairman of Playing. Unsurprisingly, he was made a Vice-President in the mid-1970s for his contributions to the running of the Club. For many seasons, he also undertook the duties of linesman for the 1st XV, both home and away, and organised the post-match raffle, which provided valuable funds for the club. He was also well-known in the area for his involvement with the Stockport Sports Quiz League and the General Knowledge Quiz League and was captain of the club’s teams in these leagues for a number of years.

Our sympathies and thoughts are with Marcia and Catherine and the rest of his family at this time. Funeral details have yet to be confirmed, but will be posted on this site when they are.
