All the shots but Ipswich held to a draw

By

Good away point

In their first outdoor game of 2018 Ipswich were held to a 0-0 draw by a well organised Cambridge City team. This was the first time all season Ipswich had not scored, the away side denied several times by the City GK who made some great saves.

Ipswich started very brightly and looked to score an early goal but good defending kept them out. Some nice play by co-captain Lucy Dunnett and Chloe Williams created a few half chances. With time ticking on City found more of a foothold in the match but it was Ipswich that had the best first chance. Ipswich won a PC and whilst the initial shot was saved Lizzy Wheelhouse reacted first and passed the rebound to co-captain Emma Millar. Millar probably had more time than she thought and her effort at goal was cleared off the line, lacking the power to beat the defender.

City also had a few attacking moves but player of the match Kat Blake and the defensive unit were in no mood to be beaten and they won every ball, to snuff out the threat.

Half time saw Ipswich dominating and confident that they would eventually break through the City defence.

The second half saw more of the same with Ipswich winning ball in defence and moving it through midfield to find the forwards. After a nice move down the right Sophie Sexton had a great shot but it was well saved by the GK. With 10 minutes left both sides sensed the first goal would be the winner and Ipswich stepped up the pressure but once again they were thwarted by good tackles or saves. With Ipswich pressing City also had a few quick breakways but Ipswich made timely tackles, Mary Sacker picking a lifted ball out the air to clear the danger.

The final whistle saw City happy with a point and Ipswich frustrated that in a game where their GK did not touch the ball they did not claim 3 points.

Ipswich now focus on National League indoor next weekend, aiming for promotion to Div 1.
