BAKER WARY OF REVENGE MISSION

By Steve Reynolds

Blues take on Lincoln United at Harrison Park on Saturday in their first home game of 2018.

Boss Neil Baker will be keen to get his first points of the New Year on the board after successive 3-2 defeats at Market Drayton Town and Basford United followed three straight wins over Christmas.

Town hammered Lincoln 9-0 at Ashby Avenue back in October, three weeks after dumping the Whites out of the FA Trophy 4-1 at home and Baker is wary that they will have revenge on their minds.

Since the 9-0, Lincoln have won five and lost five of their ten games but did dish out a drubbing of their own a fortnight ago with an 8-1 thrashing of Belper Town.

Baker told the Sentinel, “They have improved since we last met, but they had a couple of good chances early on in that game when we beat them 9-0 and had they scored it could have been a whole different story.

“We were 4-0 up at half-time and it was 6-0 by the hour mark and their heads dropped, but I don’t envisage any such result tomorrow.

“I’ve always said, it’s a hard league and they are capable of hurting teams and that’s just what they did to Belper Town last month when they put eight past them.”

Reflecting on last weekend’s defeat at league leaders Basford, Baker said:

“We were all a little stunned by what happened. The players were hurting, we were all hurting, so there was no point in me going into the changing room after the game and shouting my mouth off.

“We went there with a game plan and for 80 minutes the players were magnificent, but we just couldn’t deal with two long throws into our area, which they scored from, and we paid the price. That’s why they are top and we are mid-table.

“But we trained in the week and I am sure we will all be ready to go again on Saturday.”
