THIRD STRAIGHT LEAGUE WIN FOR LADIES

By

The Ladies on their second in a run of 4 consecutive away games travelled to Tamworth in this West Midlands Regional Women's League Div 1 game.

Leek went straight on the attack from the start came close when Izzy Wretham fired just wide of the target. The players from both teams were finding it difficult to play neat passing football on a pitch with incredibly long grass.

Blies continued to pile on the pressure and from a corner the ball fell to Naomi Sale-Hancock whose shot was blocked on the line and rebounded back for her to slot into the net. At this point it was all Leek and a string of corners followed which Tamworth defended well. Katie Maya and Lacey-May Smith both had chances saved by the keeper. Tamworth then attacked down the left and a great interception by right back Charlotte Bromley prevented a 1 V 1 with the Leek keeper.

Kim Sheldon then won the ball in midfield and found Jules Kendrick and with a defence splitting ball got Wretham in around the back who in turn got a good ball in across the front of the Tamworth goal which the Leek attacking players just failed to reach.

The next Tamworth attack saw a looping shot just beating Leek keeper Hannah Austin and dropping under the crossbar for the Tamworth equaliser. Leek developed several more goal scoring opportunities before half time but could not capitalise.

Half time Tamworth 1-1 Leek Town

Leek started the second half as they had finished the first with waves of attacks which Tamworth defended well. Leek then forced yet another corner which Katie Maya got her head to and glance into the Tamworth net to put Leek in front again.

Tamworth attacked from the restart and forced Austin into making a good save. A good strong run from centre back Emma Smith saw her pass several players and eventually find herself in the opposing box but could not just get shot or final ball away.

Emily Boon played a couple of great crosses in from the left hand side with the second one finding Wretham who cut the ball back to Lacey May-Smith and side stepping a defender fired a shot into the top corner giving Leek a bit of breathing space at 3-1.

Tamworth almost got themselves back into the game hitting the bar from 20 yards.

Simone Kelsall at left back had been solid all game and made several good interceptions and broke up play well in the final minutes as Tamworth tried to get back into the game. Leek then played out the final few minutes with captain Sale-Hancock marshalling the defence well.
