Leith win again 12-10

By John Martin

Leith managed to shade a tight encounter on a squelchy pitch at Penicuik today.

With a few regulars missing, Leith managed to tough it out when all looked lost with a couple of minutes to go. Leith had taken the lead early on with a trademark Gareth try which Doug converted.7-0 half time.

The penalty count against Penicuik was extraordinary in the first half, but the inevitable yellow cards did not arrive until the second half when their 2nd row and flanker went off. This stirred Penicuik into action and for me they played their best rugby in this period, stopping Leith from adding to their lead.

When the offenders returned Penicuik had the momentum and scored a converted try swiftly followed by a penalty giving them a 10-7 lead.

Praise for Leith though, the guys did not give up at this set back. They put Penicuik on the back foot for the remainder of the game working into the 22.Craig Smith spotted Kenny on the far wing, popped a cross field kick over which Kenny took, managed to get past a couple of defenders and scored the try - boom (as the young team would say). Leith then saw the remaining minute out comfortably

Summary - a horrible game to watch from the touchline, but league positions are not decided by how much you hump a team when you're playing well, it's all about how you do when you have to tough it out against obdurate opponents, so well done Leith.
