What can we say about this game, we went to the game with 12 1st team players missing due to injuries or working. In the squad from the under 18’s were Noah Brett, Tom Glyn Owen, Matt Jarvis and Aaron Hughes, also welcomed back Owen Williams.
When trying to work out the average age of the team – With Lee Moore, Owain Roberts, Dale Owens and Andy Wannop the only four players over 19. Starting eleven had five 17 years olds, one 18 year old and one 19 year old, and two 17 years olds on the bench. The average age of the team was 21.
Two of the 17 year olds made the 1st start for the seniors with Noah Brett and Tom Glyn Owen making up the back four with Tom Scorer and Dale Owens.
Within the first 3 minutes, after Lee Moore made a point blank save the ball fell to the feet of Rich Roberts who made no mistake from within the 6 yard box. The main worry here was that the youngsters would let their heads go down after conceding an early goal… how wrong were we..
On 11 mins some excellent work by Guy Hughes down the left wing where he left the full back standing and as he entered the box he whipped the ball back to Andy Wannop who smashed the ball into the back of the net.
This gave the team the confidence boost they needed and within a 5 minute spell Guy Hughes rattled the crossbar twice and it wouldn’t have been against the run of play.
Just on half time Beffro had a half chance and thanks to a finger tip save to put the ball onto the crossbar by Lee Moore, beffro could have gone into half time with a lead that would have been against the run of play.
Second half started with Beffro going for it (sure some stern words were shared in their dressing room).
The whole team put a shift in and Sion Childes and Gethin Davies were controlling a lot of the game but we couldn’t get the final ball. On 55 mins Owen Williams (1st game back since b4 xmas) was replaced by Aaron Taylor-Hughes. Aaz work hard down the left to try and create some openings but the beffro defence held firm.
As the younger players started to feel the pace of the game Beffro were getting stronger, and with the front three of Gary Bolton, Rich Roberts and Andrew Jones we had to be on our game.
74 mins Noah Brett replaced by Matt Jarvis.
Beffro were pushing for the win as they needed the three points to still have an outside chance of winning the league.
A long ball over the top on 76 mins and Rich Roberts made no mistake to score his and beffro’s second of the game. With nothing to lose form this game the Tigers still continued to try and attack at every opportunity.
86 mins another ball over the top from beffro and who else but Rich Roberts was there to complete his hat trick.
Full Time - Aberffraw 3 – 1 Menai Bridge Tigers
Menai Bridge Tigers Goal Scorer – Andy Wannop
Menai Bridge Tigers Man of the Match – Sion Childes
If I am honest 3 -1 wasn’t a fair reflection on the performance off the 13 players that was available.
Some nice words were also received from the Beffro Management. When they said after the game that the youngsters did themselves proud and if we keep them all the future of the club is looking good.
Sean Brett’s words after the game
‘A very brave and mature performance from the youngest side we've ever fielded shows the promise and potential we have and the youngsters will be all the better from the game time.’
