The Northwich U11s travelled to Congleton RUFC for their opening game of the 2017/18 season. With several new players within the squad all were keen to get down to business after weeks of pre-season training. With many of the opposing players having first met when they were U7s, this popular fixture between the clubs did not disappoint.
Northwich started strong and confident. With effective rucking and retaining possession of the ball they quickly started to dominate the home team. With the home team constantly having to defend, it was only a matter of time before the visitors had grown the score line to 4-0 by the half time whistle.
A level of complacency crept in for the visitors within the third quarter leading to Congleton counter rucking, taking possession and quickly running in two successive tries. This short, sharp, shock was a wake up call to the visitors leading to them re-grouping and re-focusing their energies. The Northwich players put into practice many weeks of training of using their larger players to draw the opposition in, leading to gaps within the defensive line to be exploited by Northwich’s speedy wingers out on the fringes. By the close, the visitors had added a further six tries to their tally.
A fantastic morning’s rugby was had by all and a special thanks was made to Congleton RUFC for their warm welcome and sportsmanship.
