Damp Day on Beaver Park

By

Smiler sez

A miserable day, soft underfoot.
There were a few usual suspects missing, notably Captain Cauilflower Ears Ben Smith, Gaz Mynott (injury), Danny James (master Mynott (keeping the streets safe)), Carl Baker (potential haircut preparations). We welcomed back Nick Murgatroyd and had a full squad plus 1 or 2.
Wharfedale started well (down hill) and after our usual poor start, they went in for a converted try 0-7 it looked like it could be a LONG afternoon.
Michael Briggs arrived (late) but we didn't mind as he had an immediate impact on the game and after some powerful running, set Nick (i've put a few pounds on in the Summer) Murgatroyd in for his first of the season, duly converted 7-7
Back to lacklustre defending by the Brods, and they went over again 7-12
Russell Crowther aka 'the water boy' had put a decent shift in but had to make way for Bob Dare (who instantly settled the scrums and was like a beacon of hope for the team) who put in a good 10 yard plus charge to eventually set up tackling machine Ryan Loach for a great try at the base of the post 14-12.
Bob Dare called for the ball at the kick off and having worked out over the summer had developed his pecs so much that the ball just bounced off them (some would say male mammarys) and after some shocking defence we let them creep back in to the game 14-19
We knuckled down after our dinner break and after some harsh words from Harry Hill set our stall out - they were NOT going to score in the 2nd half.
For once we had mastered the line-outs, our scrummaging was unbeatable, some of our back moves were text book!
Alan Souter put in some excellent work as did all of the forwards, Joe (Cheeseburger) Davies was bossing the line-outs and had a few trundles himself. Joe Fee who took over Captain Cauli's no.8 slot was all over the pitch. 'Handsome' Dan Hern wasn't satisfied with 2 positions this week he went for 3 (prop to 2nd row to centre) and performed admirably in all. Aussie import Nick Wells is going from strength to strength and put another good show on. Gav Williams is too ugly for the backs but worked well and even Paul Burke had an eventless game - had a great try saving tackle. Nicholas Boyes pretty much hooked every ball (theirs included) about time he did something to justify his selection
Another strong scrum gave Piggy the opportunity to be rewarded for all his hard work and went over in the top corner 21-19
After a series of maybe 12 scrums we eventually pushed the Wharfedale pack over the line for a well earned Joe Fee push over try - another conversion by Piggy. 28-19
On the last call of the game Piggy caught the ball, but everyone was so knackered (from the scrums) that nobody wanted it so he chipped over and caught to finish them off 35-19
Backs against the wall, we stood up and were counted against a young side. We dominated in the forwards and unleashed our backs on them.
A great win.
MOM - a few could have taken this, but for his relentless pick and go efforts - Alan Souter - well done Big Fat Al.
Beaver - loads to go at, but there can only be one winner when Bob Dare is on the pitch - the game changer, awesome prop, cheerful motivator, had one (and I say ONE) mishap and he gets awarded the Beaver #bullies
Viva las Beavers!
