Youth teams weekly round up

By Jeff Barnes

Result of the weekend went to U18s

This weekend we had mixed results with the youth.

U9 had a good friendly win against a local academy, U11s had mixed results, U13s lost their Cup Semi Final, U16 drew. Result of the weekend went to U18s who ground out a 1-0 victory which leaves them needing a win from the last two games to secure the division.

Saturday 11th March

PBT U9's v Lee Allison Football Academy

Due to no League fixture this weekend, we had a friendly arranged against the Lee Allison Football Academy. We had heard that this would be a tough game against a well organised footballing team. And so it proved.
We started with the right attitude and took the game to the opposition with some tough tackling and a precise passing game. If the game was on SKY SPORTS the stats would've reflected our dominance but the game remained goalless.
With one of their few visits to our half of the pitch, the opposition were given a free kick which they took full advantage of to take the lead.
Our boys fought back to draw level with a slick passing move that included Max, Jack and Conor and was finished neatly by Callum.
1-1 Half Time.
We started the 2nd half as we finished the 1st, with an excellent pressing game that pushed the opposition back. I think our strength and speed was the difference in the 2nd half and this proved the difference. Alonso continued his hot streak with another strike, and Conor completed the scoring with a well taken penalty.
This was perfect preparation for our semi final next Saturday.
Well done boys !

Wormley Youth Blacks vs Scholars

Scholars were facing a team‎ who had only lost once all season, and had the comfort of having one of the best and more experienced referees in the league. It was the old cliché of a game of two halves.

Scholars were well on top for most of the first half, missing a few half opportunities which could have given us a comfortable lead with some great play, however, we had a sucker punch when we managed to concede a penalty which was well converted by Wormley. This did not stop us continuing our dominant display‎, and we had an excellent worked equaliser that put us to 1-1. Great left sided play between Nathan and Luca, culminated in a sublime looping cross which Jack read to perfection by darting between 2 defenders and scoring with a powerful header.

‎Scholars were on the front foot with some excellent movement with Kyle up front, being fed by either the right side efforts by Jack/JP and on the left by Luca/Nathan. The whole team were pressing high and both Luis and Harry had some half opportunities that may have gone in on another day. With Harry, Luis and Olly winning the central midfield battle we thought it was only a matter of time. Unfortunately, Wormley broke away and went in 2-1 up.

The second half was totally different with Wormely camped in the Scholars half, and was simply down to so much energy and mental strength being used in the first half. It was back to the walls with the defence being commanded by Alex‎ and great support through JP, Nathan and the midfield. The score was ultimately kept to a minimum at 2-1 by the heroics of Freddie who made numerous important saves and coming quickly off his line to clear and snuff out expected goals, and rightly rewarded as MoTM. Well done Freddie, and well done to all for battling so hard – they were all shattered at the end and did all they could.

PBT White 12 – Wheathampstead Wanderers Panthers 1

The Whites were back on home territory this week, playing on 4G which really suits our style of play and showed from the moment we kicked off. The first half was a well contested affair although our pace, skill and passing ability soon proved too much for the Panthers defence when Ellis broke their back line to slot the ball home for a deserved lead. Five minute later Whites doubled their lead, again Ellis finishing off a well worked move down the right which saw Adam and Anthony combining well to break through the oppositions defensive line.

Having dominated the majority of the first half, White were caught on the break and Panthers pulled a goal back against the run of play. Immediately from the re-start Whites forced a corner which was beautifully taken by Rayan, nodded down by Ellis into the path of Archie who struck a sweet shot on the volley to make the score 3-1 just before half time. The crowd had been treated to a footballing master class and no one was going home early!

A tactical change at half time gave some of the boys a chance to play in new positions, Corrie moved into the centre of mid field, Benan was given a free role across the middle and Leo moved into the back line. All three adapted beautifully to their new positions and the second half proved to be a one sided affair as the Whites found the net another 9 times to make this Whites biggest ever victory. Ellis scored another two goals, Rayan found the net twice, Benan scored two goals and Archie completed his maiden hat-trick, the third, a powerful shot from outside the area into the roof of the net being the pick of the bunch.

All of the boys should be proud of the way they played today, Kyle and Anthony were outstanding holding their wide positions and creating much of the offensive play, Adam, Benan and Corrie bossed the midfield, our defence was as solid as we’ve seen all season and whilst Harrison had a quieter week, he still made a handful of important saves and clearances.

Well played boys!
