It was all about three points

A crowd of 92 on a sunny spring Saturday saw a scrappy game where the ‘Scholars’ took all three points.

The first half lacked cohesion as both sides struggled for any fluency.

Although the visitors got more into the game as the half wore on neither side had a worthy effort on target and so it was no surprise that half time arrived goalless. So time to watch the planes flying in and out of Heathrow…

The second half at least saw improvement from the visitors.

Ashley Nathaniel-George found space on the left and cut into the box but his low cross was scrambled away for a corner and repeated the same a few minutes later with a low cross through the six yard box. Michael Murray then tried a ‘Beckham’ but did not catch out their keeper. Then Nathaniel-George and Max Holland combined freeing Nathaniel-George on the edge of the box but his firm shot was over the bar.

Max Holland was then put through on the right of the box only to be brought down – the resultant penalty was stuck firmly down the middle by Michael Murray for the opening goal on 63 mins.

Nathaniel-George then made space to get past two defenders but his shot was parried by the keeper.

Sub Joe Bennett and Chris Doyle combined to create space for Doyle to go down the right edge of the box and from an acute angle his ‘shot’ beat the keeper finding the left hand corner of the net to make it 2-0 on 72 mins.

The visitors made further substitutions which initially allowed the home side back into the game and the visitors defence needed to do some firm defending lead by Will Wambeek.

But Eoin Casey hit a superb effort that the keeper parried over the bar for a corner.

Then Omar Vassell headed off the line and their centre forward Dam Fleming curled a shot from outside the box on to the top of the bar.

But the 'Scholars' wrapped up the points on 92 mins when Rob Hastings flicked home a cross from Danny Hart form the left.

But there was still time for keeper Berkley Laurencin to make a fantastic save down to his left to scramble the ball away and keep the opposition scoreless.

‘The Scholars’ remain 8th and still seven points off the play off places with seven league games remaining.

Team: Berkley Laurencin, Omar Vassell, Garry Jones, Carl McCluskey, Will Wambeek, Billy Adcock, Max Holland (Joe Bennett 71 mins), Chris Doyle, Michael Murray (Rob Hastings 75 mins), Eoin Casey, Ashley Nathaniel-George (Danny Hart 75 82 mins).

Sub unused: Femi Ogunsola.

Man of the Match: Will Wambeek – commanding performance.
