Will Bevan to captain Abbey 1st XV 2017/18

Bevan to spearhead Abbey's challenge next season

With pre-season training for next season just around the corner we have parked the disappointment of last season and look forward with great enthusiasm to the upcoming one. We have managed to retain the majority of last season’s team and the core of the squad remains intact with only last season’s captain Sam Hallett leaving to go join Maidenhead.

On that note it gives me great pleasure to announce that Will Bevan will be Abbey’s 1st XV captain for this upcoming season 2017/18. Will has been a regular in the 1st team for several years now and is also one of the first names on the team sheet. Excels at half back but is equally comfortable at flyhalf, his experience will be massively valuable to the young guys coming into the squad from last year’s Colts’ squad. A clubman through and through, I know all of the squad are ready to get behind him and I’m certainly looking forward to working with Will next season.

Assisting Bevan will be the other Will (the slightly bigger one) Will Woodward who will lead the forwards. I’m sure everyone in the club will get behind these two guys and the rest of the squad as we prepare for what promises to be one of our toughest campaigns so far. I’d also on behalf of the whole squad and club wish all the best to Tim Brain and Frank Long who’ve had to retire due to injuries sustained in the previous season both have served the club with honourable distinction. Pat McSweeney also will be missed as he takes a year’s sabbatical from the game to try and return next year fitter and stronger.

On the coaching side Luke Harding joins the team to look after the backs, he comes with a wealth of experience and I know the guys are looking forward to working with Luke. Luke will bring with not only his rugby knowledge but a number of his players from last season’s talented Colts’ team.

Lastly any players still not sure about pre-season, it starts at 7:15 on Tuesday 4 July at the club and will be on every Tuesday & Thursday until the start of the season, everyone welcome.
