Redcar Win The League As Darlington Are Blown Away

By

Redcar unbeaten at home all season and win in style.

Redcar kicked off on a sunny day, but with a deceivingly brisk wind, which was blowing across the pitch, from the stand side. Redcar’s backs soon got into their stride and from a Darlington clearing kick they linked up well and centre Josh Dixon opened the scoring on 10 mins, 5 – 0. Darlington missed a penalty kick after 15 mins, then Redcar scored again 5 mins later, Darlington were driven off a ruck and winger Craig Newlands showed a clean pair of heels to outstrip the defence and touchdown, 10 – 0.

On 22 mins Danny Addison got Redcar’s third try with a simple lineout win and clean passing across the backs for the winger to score, unfortunately his boots must have been on the wrong feet, as he missed again with the conversion, 15 – 0. Just mins later he kicked a penalty from in front of the posts, (at last), 18 – 0. Redcar still made most of the play with Darlington falling foul of the referee and giving away penalty after penalty. It was fitting that Redcar’s captain, stand in hooker, Shane Hurley deservedly scored the next try and secured the bonus point, 23 – 0. Another Redcar penalty was missed on 35 mins, but just before half time, second row Richard Barker scored a try under the posts and Addison converted, 30 – 0.

Half Time Redcar 30 Darlington 0

Darlington restarted the game with renewed vigour and for 15 mins they pressed Redcar keeping them pinned back on their line and after lots of penalties and scrums eventually they scored under the posts, 30 – 7. Darlington seemed to relax a bit after finally scoring and Redcar quickly got back into the Darlington 22 and won a penalty, full back Jake Duddles hit the post with the kick, Redcar then brought on their secret weapon in the considerable size of prop Greg Young and he did what was expected of him and burst through a host of tacklers to score, 37 – 7.

After 60 mins Redcar had to reshuffle their backs, because fly half Richie Young limped off injured and was replaced by winger Matty Curry. On 68 mins Craig Newlands scored his second try, from another Darlington mistake, the ball went loose and flanker Steve Johnson popped the ball to Newlands, who ran it in from almost half way, 44 – 7. Darlington rallied and got a second try, from a scrum close to Redcar’s posts, the ball came out and their fly half jinked and fell over the line, the easy conversion was missed, 44 – 12. Redcar had the last say on 78 mins when another good run from Craig Newlands was halted and Darlington knocked on, Redcar’s scrum half Brad Stovell took the advantage and passed the ball to second row Drew Reader, who romped home, to the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the large home crowd, the conversion sailed over and the whistle blew for full time.

Final Score Redcar 51 Darlington 12

Well done to all the Redcar squad, not forgetting, Joel Hatfield, Adam Gardner, Phil Dyball, Rob Bryce, Neil Cook, Jason Nicholas, Ben Durrans, Andy Wills, Andy Little, Josh Lowe, Richie Evans, Steve Wilson, Steve Sill, Alan Dixon and Sean Condell, who all played their part in this great achievement, in winning the league, apologies to anyone I have not mentioned.
Oh yes and our player coach who is still on his jollies in Hong Kong.
