Rotherham Men's 1st team were hosted by Slazenger's Hockey Club this week, with Rotherham hoping to extend their unbeaten run this season and extend their lead at the top of the Yorkshire Division 1 table. It was a game set up for goals as the previous fixture included 15 goals with Rotherham eventually winning 9-6. Since then Slazenger's have picked up some form to hold second place in the table making this game a top of the table clash.
The game started with both teams having some strong early attacks, but both defences holding strong until Rotherham broke the deadlock. Once the deadlock was broken it became apparent for both teams to throw strong numbers forward. This provided end to end hockey and with each attack almost ending with an outcome. Neither teams settled into the game though, and it became incredibly difficult to with the stop - start style of officiating. At half time it was still all to play for.
Rotherham took an early 2 goal lead in the second half and began to look comfortable. But after 2 goals against them in quick succession the lead didn't last for long. The subject of the game had come down to which team could put away their chances, proving both teams deserve to be high up the league table. The match ended in a 5-5 draw, a disappointing result for Rotherham in a game they should have won, but with Slazenger's only getting 1 point from both their fixtures against Rotherham they are unlikely to cause many concerns for Rotherham in the second half of the season.
