Shirebrook Left Hard Done By After Worsbrough Defeat
An early goal by Carter Widdowson wasn’t enough as Shirebrook were edged out by Worsbrough Bridge 2-1
Things got off to the best possible start for Shirebrook as they took the lead in the 7th minute when a short corner found Carter Widdowson on the edge of the box and he smashed the ball past everybody into the net Shirebrook kept pushing with Declan Brewin and Daniel Williams both going close to extending the Shirebrook lead but then the man in the middle decided he wanted to take centre stage in the 20th minute when he awarded Worsborough a free kick that should have been the other way with both Carter Widdowson and Billy Simpson being fouled in the build up to the free kick and he somehow managed to miss both and Shirebrook were left fuming as David Taylor put the free kick into the top corner the rest of the half saw both sides have chances to take the lead with the best Shirebrook chance falling to Bard Holmes who saw his shot blocked on the line but as the half was drawing to a close Shirebrook were denied a stone wall penalty when Daniel Williams was tackled from behind but the man in the middle said the Worsborough defender had won the ball a decision which baffled everybody in the ground including visiting fans.
The second half was very even with both sides having chances to take the lead the best Shirebrook chance falling to Declan Brewin but in the 65th minute Worsbrough took the lead Fidel Mhlolo placing the ball past Levi Owen and minutes later Worsbrough almost extended the lead but good work from Billy Simpson kept it at 2-1 as he blocked a shot on the line as the game drifted into the last 10 minutes Shirebrook were throwing everything at Worsbrough and started leaving a few gaps at the back and the man in the middle saved his best trick for last as he awarded Worsborough a penalty after both Joe Cheeseman and Carter Widdowson slid in won the ball and never touched the player but he somehow thought there was enough contact after the player had thrown himself to the floor however justice was served as Levi Owen guessed the right way and managed to save the penalty however Shirebrook couldn’t find that second goal and were left with a bitter taste in their mouth
After the game Shirebrook manager Rob Camm spoke to The Bootiful Game and gave his thoughts about the game
“We thought this game would be a good measuring stick- against a good team- to see how far we had come in the past few months and although we didn’t get the points, the performance was good and we probably should have got something from the game. We lost Sam Dockwray after 5 minutes to a serious injury which was a blow as he has been class for us so far this season the lads did everything they were asked to do today though and will be gutted not to get anything from it personally it doesn’t feel like a loss for me because in my opinion the referee took the game from us at every opportunity. They get a fair bit of stick, and it’s not an easy job -but the lad in the middle made it look hard work today. You question why you bother giving up your time Overall though we’re happy with the start we have made and looking to kick on”
