Shortwood earned their first win of the season at local rivals Slimbridge on a warm bank holiday Monday.
Adam Price almost opened the scoring for the visitors with a speculative effort after three minutes, but Hall did well to tip the ball over his bar. Ex-Shortwood winger Marley Thomas threatened for the hosts in the opening stages, first shooting just wide after a Twyman through ball, then giving Slimbridge the lead with under ten minutes played when he curled the ball beyond Pickering into the top corner, with what may have been a misjudged cross. Harlie Price had a host of half-chances for Wood throughout the rest of the first half, but he could not beat Hall, whose save to deny the no.10’s close range volley on 41 minutes being the pick of the bunch.
Shortwood scored a deserved equaliser in the 54th minute; Prictor played a low cross into Cox, who finished first time past Hall. Just seven minutes later, Cox added a second when 'keeper Pickering found him with a quickly taken kick, and the striker finished with a lob over Hall. With seventeen minutes remaining, Twyman found Turner, who had made a run from deep, but the midefielder was denied brilliantly by Pickering, who tipped the ball onto the post. Slimbridge’s Thwaite headed wide from a Turl cross in the third minute of stoppage time, before Cox completed his hat-trick a minute later. The ball fell to him just outside the box as Slimbridge pushed forward, and he finished calmly beyond the out-of-position ‘keeper.
Paul Meredith’s post match comment praised the evident commitment of the newly-assembled squad: “Every game is telling me more about the character of each and every player, but the character of the team as a whole cannot be faulted in any of the league games so far, and that is what got us the result today. We still have a lot of work to do but three points are always welcome.”
