The Greens came into the game having not played for ten days with Jon Kaye, Lee Chaffey, Joe Carden and Lewis Clayton all returning from the side which lost at home to Brentwood Town in the League Cup. Abbey started the game just outside the play-offs position, and come into the game on the back of a 5-1 victory against Mildenhall Town.
Soham made the perfect start to the game, opening the scoring after only 36 seconds when Marcus Hall collected a long throughball towards the edge of the area, where he managed to get in front of the defender to slot into the bottom corner. However the lead only lasted five minutes with the visitors equalising when Darelle Russell was given plenty of room to receive a ball into the area where he turned to knock the ball past the advanced Pope into an empty goal. Chaffey then headed wide and Gillies had a shot blocked before the striker regained the Greens’ advantage in the 16th minute when the striker glanced Carden’s left sided ball wide of Lockyer. As the game continued, Soham edged the play although clear opportunities were limited with Chaffey heading over from Lee’s corner. Abbey finished the half the stronger but couldn’t level before the break as Pope came out to gather at Darelle Russell’s feet from Gordon’s ball into the area before Holland placed wide just before the end.
Callum Russell had an early shot blocked after the restart before Soham were awarded a penalty in the 58th minute when Carden outpaced the visiting defence to get into the area only to be fouled by Daniel, with the defender receiving a yellow card; Captain Callum Russell converted the spot kick firing high into the roof of the net. Both sides made their first changes midway through the half before Holland looped a shot just over the bar from outside the area. Just before the end Lockyer made a save to keep out Norman before Joynes put wide at the far post and on the turn Gillies was off target. The Greens finished the game with ten men, when late into stoppage time, defender Jordan Lee, who had been booked early in the first half, received his second caution of the game for kicking the ball away following a foul.
