The weather was kind enough to us to allow our game to go ahead. the ground was quite soft but strong wind was helping to dry it out. We welcomed our old adversaries Foxhole, boosted by the inclusion of a couple of St Austell 1st teamers. This would certainly provide a good test for how far we have progressed this season.
We played with the wind behind us in the 1st half but it did not provide too much of an advantage as the first 20 minutes saw the game ebb and flow, with the pace Foxhole had upfront causing us a few concerns.
Then on 22 minutes after a concerted attack from us the ball fell to Ted Meagor and from the edge of the box he clipped up an unstoppable lob that fell down just inside the top right corner.
This gave us some momentum and we continued to press forward, whilst Foxhole were still very much in the game with their quick attacks continuing to cause us issues.
On 38 minutes a brilliant team move ended up freeing Steve Wootton to race away one on one v the keeper. The keeper saved well from Steve's shot but predator Andrew Seymour was following up to stroke home for 2-0. A perfect conclusion to an impressive first half in difficult conditions against good opposition. Add to that 2 goals disallowed and the management were happy with our first half efforts.
Half time: St Minver 1sts 2 - 0 Foxhole Stars
No changes were made at half time and just a few tactical improvements discussed and we were set for a challenging 2nd half defending against the strong wind.
We started where we left off with plenty of fast paced attacking and flowing football. On 50 minutes there was a game defining moment as from a set piece we shot goalwards and as the ball was cruising in to the top corner, the Foxhole defender intervened with a great one handed save and they were down to 10 men and we were 3-0 up as we scored from another top notch Corey Cleave penalty.
Having kept 4 clean sheets on the bounce in 2016 we were keen to defend another one today. Unfortunately on 56 minutes Foxhole were awarded what looked like an innocuous penalty and they stroked it home for 3-1.
Now the next goal would be so important. Foxhole were playing very bravely wth their 10 men and we could not afford to concede the next goal and really put the pressure on ourselves.
For the next 20 minutes the game ebbed and flowed and we were able to introduce all our subs. Having a strong bench is a massive strength of ours this season and the subs came on and made a real difference as the opposition tired. One unfortunate thing for our cup semi final on Wednesday was the injury incurred by top scorer Andrew Seymour. In difficult playing conditions he pulled up with a slight hamstring strain. We reshuffled and this released Ryan Pooley up top for us.
On 80 minutes Ryan Pooley ran strongly at the Foxhole defence, took the defender left and right, slowed him down and then made space to fire home strongly for 4-1 and game set and match.
To underline the quality of the bench Richard Simmons scored a beautiful 5th as the ball fell to him on the right edge of the box and he returned it goalwards with interest with the outside of his right boot cutting across the ball for a beautiful finish in to the top far corner for 5-1 on the final whistle.
