Cumbernauld 0 - 43 Strathendrick

By

Cumbernauld had their share of possession but could make nothing of a formidable Endrick defence.

Endrick kept their winning run going at Cumbernauld on Saturday with a very solid performance which allowed them to overtake the host club and move into second spot in the league table.

A seven try margin is pretty emphatic and illustrates the difference between the sides' finishing ability. Cumbernauld had their share of possession but could make nothing of a formidable Endrick defence whose quality might be judged from the simple statistic that they have played 4 hours and 20 minutes of rugby since last conceding a score to their opponents. The current Endrick policy appears to be to win the ball and counter attack immediately by setting up one of the speed merchants, making sure that support is immediately on hand. It pleases the Endrick fans but whether or not the opposition share their enjoyment is another matter.

It took Endrick just eight minutes to get off the mark, Shammy Ogilvy scoring the opening try which Kyle Campbell converted. Their second followed seven minutes later, the pack making it and Mikc O'Connell touching down.

Cumbernauld made a brave attempt to cut back that lead but could make little progress against Endrick's defence and fell further behind when Angus North collected the ball well inside his own half and with the help of a couple of mates went all the way to the line for a great score to which Kyle Campbell added the extras. That completed the first half scoring and Endrick were well pleased with a 19-0 lead at the interval.

Within 20 seconds of the restart they had stretched that lead, courtesy of another Angus North sprint from his own half to the corner. That guaranteed the try bonus for Endrick and inside the next ten minutes two more tries had put the match well beyond Cumbernauld.

The first was a solo effort by Shammy Ogilvy who showed that forwards too can move at pace even when the odd opponent gets in the way. Kyle Campbell added the extra points for that one but was less-successful with the next immediately afterwards when Angus North completed his hat-trick with a score at the corner.

The last half-hour was fairly even, played mainly in Cumbernauld territory with occasional individual breaks which came to nothing. Endrick too had some exciting sallies but only ten minutes remained for play when Fraser Graham made a long run to score Endrick's seventh try converted by Kyle Campbell for a 43-0 victory.
