Non Contact Walking Football ... Up and Running (well, Walking!)

By Thatcham Tornadoes

First ever Tornadoes Walking Football Session

A brand new initiative from Thatcham Tornadoes got up and running (well, walking!) on Friday 6th October as we held our first ever Walking Football session.

Surprisingly competitive, it took a lot of resilience from everyone involved to resist the temptation to run. Everyone was still smiling at the end with everyone enjoying the session!

Walking Football will continue to run on Fridays from 7-8pm on the astroturf at St Barts and new members would be welcome to come along and give the game a try.

Walking Football is aimed at getting players back into football but at a slower pace. We are aiming these sessions at players aged 50-ish and older.

There's no running on or off the ball, no 'deliberate' contact, no balls above 2M head height, no scoring from your own half, indirect free kicks and kick-ins instead of throw-ins. The intention is to enjoy football at a gentle pace with no sudden change of direction to put undue stresses on the body.

Walking football is becoming increasingly popular across the country and is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle, as well as encouraging people back into football who have stopped due to age or injury.
