Self-inflicted

A Brilliant first half defensive showing, disintegrates into a second half shambles.

The New Year started disappointingly for Bongs, after a very poor display, handed Southport the points, who’s all round game was far more controlled and purposeful, which earned them a deserved win.

Although on the back foot for long spells, during the first half, a brilliant defensive display restricted Southport too just two converted penalties, both inside the first ten minutes.

Despite making just three first half visits, into the opposition twenty two, Tyldesley crossed for two tries, with the first coming from a quickly taken, tapped penalty, by Mark Dickinson, who touched down, after catching the opposition napping, Paul Martin added the two, giving them a 6-7 lead after fifteen minutes.

Southport continued to apply the pressure, but failed to take the lead, after another two penalty attempts sailed wide.

Tyldesley had a decent spell, and with the half all but up, great handling, had Paul Martin go over, who then converted, giving Bongs an unexpected 6-14 half time lead.

It took just forty five seconds, into the second half, for Southport too achieve, what they’d failed to do, during the first forty minutes, has they cut open, a previously, solid Bongs defense, and crossed for a converted try, who then regained the lead, four minutes later, via a penalty.

A good Tyldesley scrum, five meters from the hosts line, enabled, Matt Soulsby, too pick up, before nipping in, for a try, putting them back in front, conversion missed.

More pressure resulted in the visitors extending their lead, too six points, after Martin, dissected the sticks, with his only penalty attempt.
Once again, poor defense, was punished, after port crossed for a good second converted try, giving them a narrow, one point cushion.

Tyldesley came back well, but turned down three points, in search of another try, and it nearly paid off, but for a solid home defense, that repelled all.

A Southport clearance kick, was met with a bit of inexperience, gifting Southport a quick throw in, resulting in a third, converted try, with just four remaining, which denied Bongs a losing bonus point, and any chance stealing the game.

MOM Mark Dickinson.

Tyldesley seconds ran out comfortable winners against a weakened Burnley.
