Welwyn welcomed 3 teams to Hobbs Way this weekend and a clean sweep of wins saw Mick Hills getting the Chairmen’s jugs in!
Welwyn 2nd Team hosted Hemel Hempstead in the first Merit Table 1 fixture of the season. Welwyn along with Hemel were promoted as part of the restructure of the leagues. As last season proved the match would be fairly close but Welwyn were victorious 35 – 21.
With a couple of changes to the team through unavailability and call up to the 1s, Welwyn still managed to produce a strong team and took 3 substitutes along for the for ride.
Hemel took the lead early on with a good breakaway try from their own half with an easy conversion 0-7. Welwyn drew level with some excellent play which saw Brad Wiles run in from the left hand side producing a beautiful dummy kick to commit the Hemel full back and get over the line. Brad with the conversion 7-7.
The Welwyn scrum was dominant throughout. In the second half Hemel had to go uncontested due to injuries. Welwyn’s fitness throughout proved the difference in the win with some powerful (beardy like) runs coming from both backs and forwards breaking the line almost every time.
Tries from PJ, Ollie x2 and penalty try (sorry PJ, stats don’t lie) finished the scoring with Brad kicking 100%.
Next week Welwyn will go to Cheshunt in an attempt to keep the run going.
