Yate avoid any Halloween scares with victory over Weston-Super-Mare

Back to back wins leapfrog Yate into second place in the division

Yate looked to take charge of this encounter in the early stages, and within 6 minutes, a launched pass out of defence from Troy Sutherland picked out a late run from Takayo Nembhard. As the ball came out of the sky, the striker caught it first time to clinically finish past the opposing keeper from the edge of the penalty area. An interchange with Joel Hall then allowed the same scorer to force the Weston custodian into a full-length save as Yate looked to add to their tally.

The visitors played some good approach football, whilst Yate’s defensive unit kept a good, strong shape, allowing Bailey Lacey and especially Toby Walwin to get forward up the wings, backed up by Ellis Kow also causing problems on the left side. From a deep Weston corner, the ball was delivered to the back-post, headed back across the face of goal and the equaliser was nodded in, as the hosts switched off in picking up their men and then began to get careless in possession. A little too often, the final ball was rushed and the contest was now fairly even.

An untidy defensive challenge from the home side gave the visitors a set-piece just on the D and, as the free-kick was whipped over the wall, Mason Hawkins’ fingertips flicked it onto the bar to safety. The resultant corner was cleared away, and Yate broke at pace. Hall picked up the pass centrally to set up Nembhard with a fine ball inside the right back, and he stroked in his second goal.

HT 2-1

The home side continued in the same vein after the break, with a dangerous Kow cross causing confusion in the Weston box, before a well-worked Sam Knight free-kick found Nembhard’s flick on and Kow stabbed the ball wide of the post.

It felt like a third strike was needed, as Weston looked very capable when they played their football, but the Yate back line stood firm. Centrally in midfield, the hosts worked hard through Knight and George Holland, and latterly Joey Martin-Tulloch who himself tested the visiting keeper from outside the box.

A late scare for the home side was avoided when, after a ricochet, the ball was stabbed goalwards inside the area, but it drifted harmlessly wide and Yate claimed a deserved home victory. Next up, is an away tie at Paulton Rovers in the Roger Stone Memorial Cup on Thursday 8th November.
