Ashton opened their account for the 2014/15 season with a draw in Derbyshire following the proverbial game of two halves after they had seemed in complete control at the interval. The visitors carried on where they had left off last season as they took a 2 goal advantage within the opening quarter of an hour, with Chris Baguley opening the scoring following a short corner as his effort was helped by a slight deflection. Within 6-minutes Richard Bennett had scored on his full debut after Martin had foiled him with a point blank save. The ball was returned into the area and the forward’s well placed header was good enough to extend the Robins’ advantage.
In between times Warne had a great chance to level from Gorton’s poor clearance, but fired just wide from 20-yards, but with Baguley controlling midfield he picked out Pilkington whose cross was then blocked. Right winger Cole began to make inroads for the Nailers and it was his deep cross which saw Ward put his header straight at Phillips before the same player produced another good cross with Stevenson this time unable to convert.
Into the second period and the pace of the game began to slow, but the temperature was soon rising as a melee saw several players booked following Gorton’s flattening of Stevenson. The home winger was to have his revenge shortly afterwards as his perceptive pass allowed Cole to reach the byline and his cross saw substitute Wells bring the hosts back into the game. A flick on then saw Wells clean through before Phillips denied him. Within 6-minutes Town were level as Ross’s free kick was flicked on to the back post and touched home by fellow centre back Eldridge.
With the home side now looking the more threatening Jones’ cross saw Wells’ header held by Phillips before Ross and Eldridge combined again for the latter to put his header just too high. Danger man Wells was then denied by another block from Phillips, before Chadwick squeezed his way along the byline and saw his shot deflected into the side netting and a fine run by Stevenson saw his cross sidefooted straight at the keeper by Wells.
