Robins Up To Fifth!

By

Johnson Brace Lifts the Points. Report by David Robinson.

Ashton United came from behind to register a fine victory in the Midlands which moved them up to 5th position in the Premier Division. Sam Modlinsky was debuting in place of the suspended Paul Phillips in goal and Martin Hill was welcomed back on the right wing following a spell out with a broken arm, unfortunately the replacement keeper made the worst possible start on 5 minutes as he miscontrolled a back pass presenting a simple finish to Aaron Williams.

On a surface which was both heavy and slippery it was midway through the half before Hill and Dale Johnson worked an opening on the right which saw Johnson’s cross knocked past the far post by Kayde Coppin. A poor clearance by Modlinsky then saw Palmer’s return effort go narrowly wide before Chris Baguley’s layoff from Ashley Young’s pass was hit too high by Johnson. The Pics then returned a ball into the visitors’ penalty area which saw a scramble resulting in Brown’s effort hitting the left hand post but with the interval in sight Ashton engineered the equaliser as a corner was returned into the area by Sam Wilson which allowed Johnson to sidestep the advancing keeper and roll the equaliser into the empty net.

With an hour showing on the clock the Robins moved ahead as a corner was headed back into the area by Jay Gorton and acrobatically finished on the volley by Johnson for his fourth goal since returning from Salford. Martin Hill then sent a high return into the area which Johnson controlled well before playing in substitute Lee Rick who skied his effort. With Ashton looking relatively untroubled at this juncture a clearing header found Mugisha bursting into the box before firing over and Callum Williams then stepped in ahead of Johnson but also fired over.

Rick’s long cross was then just finger tipped away by Belford before right on full time Rick won the ball and his cross saw Coppin only just denied by a fine save from the Olympic keeper. Ashton now visit Buxton and host Belper Town ahead of the busy Christmas fixtures.

Team: Modlinsky, Wilson, Haslam, Gorton, Higgins, Young, Hill (Rick), Gee, Johnson (Halford), Baguley (Steadman) & Coppin.

SNU: Barrett & Pearson.
