Killer On Strike Again!

By

Leading scorer Martin Pilkington puts paid to feisty Lynn. Report by David Robinson.

2 late goals gave Ashton United a vital victory over their visitors from Norfolk at a windswept Hurst Cross. With injured captain Jay Gorton absent the Robins gave a first start to Jack Sherratt on the left wing, but it was Kings Lynn who started the better of the two sides and a left wing ball saw Mulready’s cross drift dangerously across goal after a couple of minutes.

At the other end, Dale Johnson played Gary Gee into the area only for the midfielder to slice his effort over and Brad Robinson then won the ball in midfield and Martin Pilkington was only denied by Street’s fingertips in the visiting goal, Robinson going close himself as he curled a free-kick narrowly wide. Almost out of nothing Ashton took the lead just after the half hour as Greg Pearson’s free kick was touched on by Sam Wilson leaving Johnson to finish from close range and still before half-time a free-kick from an identical position by Pearson saw the unmarked Wilson head well wide from 6 yards out.

Ten minutes of the second half had elapsed when Yong’s cross from the left saw Mulready just failing to make sufficient contact before a superb cross field pass from Gee picked out Robinson who cut inside, but saw his goal bound effort hit Watson. Midway through the half Bell’s corner was volleyed just past the far post by Bridges, but it was no more than the visitors deserved as another corner from Bell was headed goalwards and touched home by Mulready.

With the game hanging in the balance it was Ashton who made the vital breakthrough after sub Leadbetter had gone down in the box with the referee unmoved, Johnson picked out Leadbetter’s run and his cross from the right wing was knocked home by leading scorer Martin Pilkington. Ashton then made the scoreline even more emphatic as they did win a penalty following a good run from Martin Hill which led to Leadbetter clearly being brought down – Lee Rick converting confidently to send the Robins up to 3rd in the league table. Johnson almost had the final word following a good turn 25 yards out, but shot wastefully high.

Team: Phillips, Haslam, Pearson, Wilson, Higgins, Young (Rick), Robinson (Leadbetter), Gee, Johnson, Pilkington & Sherratt (Hill).
