Robins' Play Off Ambitions Dented

By

Ashton return from pointless trip to Whitby. Report by David Robinson.

Ashton’s playoff hopes suffered a severe setback as they went down to 2 late goals in North Yorkshire. Following a closely fought first half the visitors missed several good chances and were made to pay by the Seasiders who duly secured their Premier League status.

The hosts started better on a fine playing surface and a couple of dangerous crosses from Hopson and Waters needed to be cleared by Ashton’s centre backs Gorton and Higgins. Martin Pilkington then sidestepped 2 defenders for the Robins but delayed his shot too long until it was blocked and a quick break then found Pilkington’s cross picking out the unmarked Chris Baguley whose shot felled Poole as he made the block. A comedy moment followed in a near action replay as this time Pilkington’s shot caught Poole in a tender area again leaving him grounded.

Jay Gorton needed to be replaced at half time by Greg Pearson, and Ashley Young’s cross to the far post then saw Baguley’s header force Bland into a tip over and from the resulting corner Stephen Mason appeared but put his header over the top. A slick move then saw Dale Johnson find Pilkington who in turn picked out Baguley who couldn’t get enough behind his effort allowing the keeper to make a low save and Pilkington then took too long when clear in the area before Johnson swung a left foot but sent his effort off target.

Pilkington was then guilty of missing 2 good chances in quick succession – he escaped the 2 centre backs but scuffed his effort allowing Bland to palm the ball away for a corner from which he cut inside to open up a clear sight of goal but put a weak effort straight at the goalkeeper. The deadlock was broken on 79 minutes as a cross from the left reached substitute Garner who beat Baguley near the by line and fired in a cross which was initially blocked allowing Snaith to hammer home the rebound and within 5 minutes a poor clearance by Phillips was picked up by Clark who had a clear run on goal and saw his cross converted as the far post by Hopson.

Team: Phillips, Mason, Wilson Gorton (Pearson), Higgins, Young, Hill (Coppin), Gee (Deegan), Johnson, Pilkington & Baguley .
