Port peg back Robins

Report by David Robinson. Pictures Jez Sayle

Ashton would have been disappointed to return from the Merseyrail Community Stadium with just a point after posting an early two goal lead but in doing so retained their unbeaten away record. Showing several changes from the Brackley game Luke Pilling returned in goal with Kyle Jacobs at right back and Bradley Jackson was handed a full debut in midfield.
On a bright sunny day the Robins started well and the referee awarded a free kick as Matty Chadwick was pulled back just as he released Craig Hobson, Chadwick’s shot was then just blocked by Ogle from Liam Tomsett’s layback but after Chadwick had been fouled again 20 yards out he took his revenge by curling the free kick home off the left hand post.
Five minutes later debutant Jackson was able to head home the second after Chadwick had retrieved Hobson’s ball into the area and provided a deep cross. Chadwick then dragged an effort off target as Ashton dominated but Dion Charles lobbed an effort wide after Matt Regan underhit a headed backpass. Nathan Lowe then played a 1-2 with Jack Sampson before firing well over for the Sandgrounders and Jackson headed another Chadwick delivery across goal. Hobson then headed Chadwick’s free kick which was helped against the bar by Hanford as the interval arrived.

The hosts made a double substitution at the break and a long throw saw Charles slice his effort wide but with 9 minutes gone a return ball into the area fell somewhat fortuitously to Ryan Astles who hammered it home. Sampson’s header from Richards’ free kick was then deflected narrowly wide and Tomsett curled an effort juat past the post from Nicky Platt’s pass.
Substitute Gilchrist then made space but curled his shot straight into Pillling’s arms and Charles also brought a fine save out of the keeper. With 15 minutes left the hosts won a corner which Gilchrist touched home at the far post after Sampson had flicked on Mueller’s delivery. With the game now up for grabs Charles’s inside shot broke to Richards who cleared the crossbar and Ogle appeared to be fortunate not to be penalised for bringing down Chadwick in the area. The final action saw Pilling at full stretch from Charles’s cross and Aaron Chalmers volleyed a Chadwick free kick over the bar.

Team: Pilling, Jacobs, Hill, Regan, Chalmers, Sheridan, Jackson (Anghel 76), Platt, Hobson (McAtee 78), Tomsett, Chadwick, SNU: McHale, Bakare, Evangelinos.
