Robins fail to complete Double

By

Report by David Robinson. Pictures Jez Sayle

Ashton fail to complete their first double of the season as visitors Curzon came from behind to take all the points at Hurst Cross. The hosts gave a debut to full back Oliver Crowley and were forced into late replacements as Matty Chadwick and Sam Sheridan were both unable to start, the latter being replaced by Paul Ennis and it was he who fired Ashton ahead from the penalty spot after 38 minutes.
The build up to the goal saw a slightly fortuitous deflection as Jonathan Hunt challenged Liam Martin, the ball running through to leave Liam Tomsett goal side of Mohamud Ali who brought him down, picking up a yellow card in the process. The visitors had started the stronger and good work in the area by Oliver Crankshaw led to Ryan Brooke’s shot being touched wide, the resulting corner seeing Shaw’s header blocked.
Ali then forced a low save out of Luke Pilling and Crankshaw escaped Josh Askew but dragged his effort wide. Crankshaw’s next pass was just too strong for Joe Guest and as Ashton pressed forward Casian Anghel gave Mason an easy save from a 22 yard free kick.

The Nash were back on the attack at the start of the second half and Rowney’s shot deflected wide from Crankshaw’s lay off before Brooke headed Crankshaw’s cross well past the near post.
Guest then went down in the area from Rowney’s pass with no penalty awarded and Ennis volleyed a loose ball wide before Liam Goulding strode forward and hit a rising effort over. Just past the hour the equaliser arrived as McJannett’s deep cross was headed back by Guest for Brooke to force it over the line and things could have got even worse 4 minutes later as Guest cut inside and put a fine left foot strike against the post with the Ashton defence rocking.
Two minutes later and the visitors did move ahead as a quick break saw Guest’s cross converted by the stooping figure of Brooke. Crankshaw then brought an important low save out of Pilling after Brooke had robbed Jones near the touchline. Brooke then missed an absolute sitter inside the 6 yard box from Racchi’s ball and as the Robins pressed for the leveller Tomsett shot narrowly wide from Martin’s lay off before Martin’s own effort was forced wide and Martin was denied close in by a fine save from Mason.
Team: Pilling, Crowley, Askew, Jones, Regan, Kay, Tomsett, Goulding, Anghel (Chadwick 67), Ennis (Crowther 71), Martin. SNU: Roberts, Hill.
