A Bridge Too Far

By

Brig turn things around. Report by David Robinson

Ashton’s last chance of silverware disappeared as the hosts turned the game around after the interval at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium. The Robins handed a debut to goalkeeper Aaron Ashley and could have taken the lead after just 3 minutes as a lightning break saw Matty Chadwick set up Ryan Crowther who placed his left foot effort wide. A free kick was then flicked on for Bridge for Waddecar to head into Ashley’s arms.
Milligan’s corner was then headed just past the far post by Heaton before Ashton’s front three combined for Jack Dyche to fire just off target but 2 minutes later a long ball dropped off Lee Knight for Crowther to fire home the opener from 25 yards. Milligan immediately knocked home Riley’s corner for Brig but a player was judged to be in an offside position before a Milligan free kick reached Lawlor at the far post and he fired over from a narrow angle. A great move just before the break almost saw Ashton’s advantage doubled as Dyche’s effort just missed the far post.
3 minutes after the restart the hosts levelled matters as Vasey converted from close range following a bout of pinball after Ashley had saved Potts’ shot and Waddecar had hit the post in the follow up. 6 minutes later and a forward pass saw Vasey adjudged to have been brought down in the area by Ashley with Milligan confidently converting from the spot. As Ashton chased an equaliser Chadwick reached the by line and saw his cross just miss Crowther and another Chadwick cross was miscued to sub Jody Banim who fired wide right on time.
Team: Ashley, Smalley, Coo (Banim), Mason, Woodford, Lees, Crowther, Stachini, Chadwick, Dyche, Knight (Roberts). SNU: Cartwright, Lowe, Pilling.
