Despite the result, the final home game for the first team showed some promising play. It was anything but the usual 'nothing-to-play-for' game, with Balham still chasing a promotion slot in their first season in the Combined Counties League.
Balham opened the scoring on 22 minutes, followed by their second on 26 minutes, with 2-0 being the score at half-time. In the second half, and on 59 minutes, Matt Barclay slotted home a penalty for Ash after a Balham player had handled the ball in the penalty area.
At 2-1 the game was see-sawing, back and forth, until Balham scored again on 78 minutes, with a penalty and then claimed their fourth in the 90th minute.
A slightly disappointing end to the home season, especially after 3 good wins against Dorking, at home, and South Park Reserves and Cove away. Nevertheless the potential for Ash United for next season was on display and with, perhaps, a bit more luck with decisions on the field of play, we should be better placed in our journey back to the Premier Division.
The final game of the season takes place at Banstead on Saturday 22nd April, 2017, when Banstead Athletic are the hosts at Merland Rise, Tadworth, with a 3pm kick-off.
