Well that was a long interesting game
By Mathew Cook
The man, the catcher, the teas, the brick wall, the parapainter saves the day.
Bare had the visitors of third place Heysham ‘A’ on an overcast day at cross hill park. With Nev collecting his kit and having a fag, Cookie won the toss in his absence and chose to bowl first on a partially wet track. Both Heysham openers got off to good starts with a mix of defence and attack but Townsend (19) was done by the straight one as Cook (3/36) then got 3 LBW victims including a chameo from Yates (16). Barker (48) rode his luck on a few occasions with some lusty blows but it run out 2 short of his half century as Bhardwaj (2/57) got 2 in 2 with inswinging yorkers. A solid 50 run partnership then came whilst the thunder and lightening dazzled the Lancaster sky but still no rain! Smith (38) was eventually out with a pearling catch from Jay and Oz (2/61) claimed Hesketh (10) with a good catch from White. A mature 32 not out from experienced Antcliffe and aided by captain Cross (12 not out) saw Heysham, after a 10 minute rain delay, get to 186 for 7 off there allocated 45 overs.
After a sublime tea from Pompey parapainter Bare went out positively in the chase of 187. Oz (18) got off to a rapid start then was removed by Cross (2/30) as he plaid on! Schwepsy (13) then became the first victims for Whitelock (4/14) as he then roped through Bares top order. Then the rain came but with 12 overs been taken from the game, Bare tried to settle for the rain affected draw. Cook (12) and Jonesy offered some resilience but Rawlings (2/18) removed Cook and eventually Antcliffe (1/1) removed The Welsh lad for a 43 ball duck with the fith LBW of the innings things looked bleak for Bare. Whitelock bowling 9 maidens in a row and with Bare now on 69/9 with nearly 10 overs there was only a glimmer of hope. Up steps Andy ‘I’m focused today’ Jay and AlalalaVish to supposedly defend the cause and frustrate the Heysham bowlers. Jay top scoring with 19 not out and Vish with 6 not out, they carried there bats and got Bare to much needed 6 points as Bare finished on 97/9. A heroic performance to take us through to Carnforth ‘A’ in the league and a mere matter of a cup final bs Sedgewick next weekend. Right I better get some sleep here down south!
