Canaries Stun Stafford with Nifty Newton Hat Trick

Report by Merv Nash

After the disappointment of Saturday, Barwell bounced back to record a thrilling victory at Marston Road over Stafford Rangers. This was a game that could quite easily have finished 7 - 4 in the "Canaries" favour, Barwell's "ace in the pack" Danny Newton scored a splendid hat-trick and came close to doubling that tally as his pace was too much for the Stafford defence all night.

Barwell made a good start showing plenty of confidence on the ball and Newton was inches wide with an effort after a Tom Weale long throw caused confusion in the home ranks.

Newton again went close with a header as Barwell sought the opening goal.

On 43 minutes Barwell's pressure finally told, another long throw from Weale bounced awkwardly in front of the Stafford keeper John Brain and Newton slammed the loose ball home.

Two minutes later Barwell scored a second goal, Connor Gudger bursting into the penalty area was brought down by Stafford defender Rhys Swetnam. Newton made no mistake from the spot.

If Barwell thought this game was over they were in for a rude awakening when two minutes into the second half Stafford's central defender Jermaine Johnson netted from close range after a scramble in front of the Barwell goal.

At this point it was all Stafford and Barwell did well to repel the pressure.

In the 56th minute Barwell gave themselves a breathing space by going 3 - 1 up. Newton with a great solo run finished in style after rounding home keeper Brain.

Stafford's Danny Quinn had a great chance to reduce the arrears when unmarked he headed wide.

With ten minutes left the game was in the melting pot again when Stafford winger Fabrice Kasiama caught the Barwell defence square and sent a low shot past Liam Castle.

In the closing minutes Barwell regained their composure and almost added to their tally when substitute Callum Earls and Newton twice went close to adding to Barwell's tally.
For his hat trick, Danny Newton was awarded the MIRA Man of the Match.
