Victory in the inaugural match for the girls' softball team

BCC's first all girl cricket team claims victory

On a chilly evening and with all 10 of our girls playing their first ‘proper’ league match (although when asked they seemed fairly unsure whether it was or not!) we agreed that the main objective of the evening was to ensure we had a lot of fun. Alice was our captain for the evening and got us off to a good start by winning the toss and deciding to bowl, obviously confident that we could chase down any total Farnham Common set. Alice and Lottie opened the bowling and in short order Lottie claimed our first wicket with a straight one that was too much for the opposing batsman. This success was greeted with a stunned silence from her teammates and from Lottie herself - either overcome with the magnitude of the moment or due to the fact that no-one was quite sure what was happening.

Annabel and Simi were our next bowlers. Annabel bowling a good line and Simi coming back with a very strong second over after a series of cartwheels following her first. This must be the secret. Madison and Grace were up next; Madison ably displaying her new run up developed 10 minutes before the game started and Grace choosing to bowl in her new cap - well, it was a cold evening. Both bowled well. Hannah and Amy continued the good work with Hannah taking a stunning caught and bowled. Erin and Tess did well against what was probably the opposition’s best batting pair and we went into tea optimistic that we could chase the target of 247.

Alice and Lottie opened the batting with Alice hitting some great shots and giving Lottie some ‘sisterly’ encouragement…”Lottie, hit the ball!”. Simi and Annabel batted very sensibly, steering us to 215 with some very well-timed shots from Annabel not quite piercing the field. Madison and Grace kept up the good work, forcing the opposition bowlers into bowling a rash of wides. 235. Amy and Tess then got the scoreboard rattling along with some very aggressive running between the wickets and a couple of nice pull shots for 4 from Tess. This took our total to 263 as our last pair, Hannah and Erin, came to the crease. At this point, a slightly nervous coach pointed out to the new batters that we were now leading by 16 runs so really just needed to avoid losing wickets. So it was with some alarm that the girls chose to go for a suicidal single second ball. Nevertheless, both Hannah and Erin restored calm and both batted sensibly and with great nerve to hold off some strong bowling from the opposition and see us to victory by 10 runs.

We may come up against some stronger opposition in future games but it is very encouraging for the girls to have a win under their belts.

Most importantly, we had set out with the objective of having a fun evening and the girls certainly seemed to have that. They were also a credit to themselves and the club with how they behaved, supported each other and even the opposition - with our captain Alice leading the way, often sportingly acknowledging opponents good shots. Great to see.

Well done girls!
