Club Announcement - Mike Phillips

It is with deep sadness that the Club has received the news of the passing of Mr Mike Phillips.

Mike was perhaps more affectionately known to all at the Club and throughout the Community and beyond as Mike “Ginger”.

Mike played for his beloved Green and Golds and went on to carry out several duties for the Club at all levels.

He epitomised the term “Clubman”. He would do absolutely anything for our Club.

Up until his illness around two years ago Mike would be seen carrying heavy blocks and carrying out any jobs that were required at his “field of dreams” at Mount Pleasant Park. That was how much Beddau RFC meant to him. He would rarely miss any games; if it was a long away haul down West Wales then you would guarantee Mike would be there to support the boys and would never have a bad word to say about individuals, the team or the Club. He was also the top trainer at the Club, he would rarely miss a senior training session whatever the weather and would always be there with a deep pocket of sweets.

He was a true gentleman and was a real, real family man. His boys Ian (Bompa) and Stephen (Freddie) were the apple of his eyes and soon, when he and his soulmate Val became grandparents to Ian and Lyn and Stephen and Tracey’s children Kelsey,Hayley,Lewys and Caitlin they played a huge and happy part in his life.

He had a heart of gold and would stop and talk to anyone and help anyone without blinking.

His boys have followed in his Dad’s footsteps and have become huge Clubmen.

Mike would love watching Bompa play darts at the top level that he did and watch Freddie enjoy such a big playing and coaching career. In the latter few years he would also see his Grandson Lewys feature in that special green and gold jersey.
Mike was and will always be a true green and gold.

The Community has lost another one of its true great people.

Everybody at the Club is devastated to hear of Mike’s passing and wish to send their deepest condolences to his family and large group of friends.
