John was someone who was a gifted sportsman and true gentlemen. He played at Berwick RFC for many years and when I first came to the Club in 1990 he was a fixture in the first team and would remain so for many many years. John is someone who I greatly admired as a rugby player and as a human being. He was always generous of spirit and would never, ever, pass you in the street without stopping and speaking to you - I considered him a friend long after he stopped playing rugby, and still do.
We will all have many stories about John - the penalty move "give it a go" or his unwillingness to be lifted in a line out. However as the news broke yesterday evening just before the monthly Executive Meeting Guy Moor reminded me of a legendary penalty kick that John slotted away at Stewartry in a Cup match. It was from distance and there was a look of disbelief from the opposition when a second row took the ball to get ready for the long distance kick. But the kick was true and Berwick came away progressing to the next round - we had Berwick's own version of John Eales. John never made a fuss about it - indeed he never made a fuss about all his many great achievements. He loved his family, his sport and was successful in work.
When I hear the details for the funeral I will post them here so that those of you that can attend are able to do so. I will also, both personally and, on behalf of the Club pass on our deepest condolences to his family.
RIP John - a true gentle giant - Berwick is a poorer place for your passing.
