Great win for Burn

By

Burn travelled away to third in the table Warrington and came away with an excellent 10-23 victory.

Early in the game Burn rode their luck, but as the game progressed the more comfortable they looked, they retained possession well and their defence just kept knocking their opponents down, which helped them to secure an impressive win.

Warrington applied pressure on Burn from the start and they were soon helped as Danny Booth was shown a yellow card after 2 minutes. Almost straight away Warrington nearly took advantage as they created an overlap out wide, the winger should have scored, but lost control of the ball as he dived for the line. Warrington continued to press Burn without luck and Burn made them pay as they steadily worked their way into the Warrington half and were rewarded with a penalty just outside the 22 on 9 minutes, Phil Baines kicked the 3 points. Warrington responded and were dragging Burn from side to side, but the Burn defence held up, in particular a last gasp tackle by Danny Booth and Steve Kent to hold Warrington up over the line and then Harry Pilkington putting in a try saving tackle to force a knock on as a Warrington man went for the corner. This left Warrington with just two penalty kicks at goal, which were unsuccessful. Burn had little ball, but when Burn managed to get hold of it they made their opponents pay as they scored the game’s first try on 32 minutes. It was a great team try, they maintained possession and went through phase after phase as they made it to with 5 metres of the try line before the ball was fed to Phil Baines, his dummy and handoff created a slight gap and he showed enough strength to stretch and score. Baines was then unable to kick the conversion, but Burn led by 8 points. Warrington then hit back with 3 points of their own. The home side then made a mess of the restart, Burn gathered possession and went through the phases and were rewarded with a penalty in front of the posts, Phil Baines successfully kicked the points. There were no more points before the break, so Burn went in ahead 3 -11.

There was another early yellow card in the second half, this time it was a Warrington forward. Unlike their opponents Burn were able to take advantage of their number supremacy with a try on 48 minutes. Burn had pinned Warrington into their own 22, they kept the ball tight, until they released it wide, as the ball reached Luke Philipedes he still had work to do, but he did well to beat his man to score in the corner. Phil Baines then kicked well to slot the conversion from the touch line making the score 3 – 18. Another try followed for Burn on 64 minutes, Burn had been on top in the scrum all day and from a 5 metre scrum they drove over the line allowing Corey Logan to control the ball at the back and touch down to score. Phil Baines was unable to kick the extra points. After this Warrington came back at Burn, the visitors defence continued to hold Warrington out until 74 minutes, penalties had pushed Burn back into their 22, from a line out Warrington passed the ball wide, a grubber kick was then put in and as the ball bounced over the try line a Warrington player won the foot race to fall on it to score. The conversion was added, this made the score 10-23 and this is how the game ended.

This was an excellent team performance, when in possession Burn showed composure and built pressure. Their defence was also excellent, which as the game went on made Warrington lose fluency as they struggled to find a way through Burn. Burn were missing regular starters, but those players who came in to cover didn’t let anyone down and showed the growing strength in the squad. The result leaves Burn in fourth place, the table is so tight with just 5 points separating third and eighth position. Next week Burn face another tough game as they welcome second place Northwich to Ramsgreave Drive.
