After drawing our opening League match at home to Torpoint we were looking to take maximum points from the reverse fixture
Having drawn our opening League match at home to Torpoint we were looking to take all three points from the reverse fixture which, after another damp week it was doubtful if the pitch would be playable, and although the surface was heavy it passed a morning inspection.
After a feisty start in which both sides had a player cautioned, the game settled down for a while and we began to take control. With 12 minutes played Harry Evans slid a pass through to Ben Watson on the left of the area, he found Adam Carter whose shot was on target but lacked pace and Jason Peters in the home goal comfortably held the ball. Two minutes later Adam touched the ball off for Neil Slateford who fired a low hard shot towards the corner of the goal, but Peters got down well to push the ball out for a corner. Then with 16 minutes played we broke the deadlock when NEIL finished off a good move involving Adam and Harry to strike the ball past Peters for the opening goal. Just four minutes later we doubled our lead with Harry making a good run down the left wing before cutting into the area and firing a powerful shot high into the net at the near post. With just over half an hour of the match played we were reduced to ten men when Harry was caught by a challenge from Steve Rogers, but probably went down a bit too easily which the referee interpreted as a dive and showed him a second yellow card. Ironically, Harry's first yellow was for an innocuous looking challenge on Rogers early in the game! Not surprisingly Torpoint had the better of the remainder of the first half in terms of possession, although didn't create much in the way of scoring opportunities, the nearest being when a low hard cross along the six-yard box could have caused us problems, but the went harmlessly out for a throw in.
Torpoint start the second half as they ended the first and within two minutes of the restart came close to pulling a goal back when Curtis Damerell broke through our defence but Martin Margarson came out of his goal quickly to block the Torpoint player's effort, pushing the ball out for a corner. But two minutes later, Torpoint were awarded another corner, controversially given, when it appeared that the Torpoint player who crossed the ball into the box in the first place, was in an offside position and from the corner the ball ricocheted off one of our players into the back of the net, rather fortunately reducing the home side's deficit. However, we bounced back from that disappointment and with ten minutes of the second half played we regained a two-goal margin when JAKE ASH got his head to a corner, glancing the ball into the far corner of the goal, which for some reason Peters decided to dispute rather too vigorously for the referee who showed him a yellow card. With a two goal lead and a man short understandably we concentrated on trying to keep what we had, but with 64 minutes of the game played Torpoint reduced their arrears to one goal again when, following a low hard cross into our six yard box Ben Applegate was first to the ball and stabbed it past Martyn from close range. However, Torpoint rarely looked like getting a decisive third goal and we ended the game by taking all three points, extending our unbeaten League run to nine games.
