Anderson double stuns league high-flyers

By

A brace by Luke Anderson gave Brigg Town a 2-0 win against high flying Handsworth Parramore.

Brigg needed to defeat a very good Handsworth side to avoid relegation and did after their performance of the season.

Brigg’s game plan was to sit back and hit their opponents on the counter attack. It worked perfectly and Handsworth were unable to break down a solid defence.

Luke Anderson broke the deadlock in stoppage time at the end of an uneventful first half. Skipper Anthony Bowsley whipped a free kick into the box and Anderson rose highest to head home.

Handsworth still struggled to create chances in the second half and resorted to long ball tactics that didn’t work.

Goalkeeper Jody Barford was called into action tipping over a volley by Shane Warne at full stretch, but was untroubled for most of the afternoon.

At the other end Grimes raced clear only to be denied by a good save from David Ratcliffe.

Brigg sealed the victory when Anderson latched onto a through ball by Lewis Dennison and fired in.

Handsworth were unable to score a consolation and their day went from bad to worse as striker Kieran Wells was dismissed for an off the ball incident.

This was a great win for Brigg that kept their hopes of avoiding relegation alive. Brigg will stay up if they win their last match at Thackley and other results go their way.

Brigg assistant manager Rob Watson was delighted.

“We won 2-0 and the lads were fantastic,” he said.

“We worked very hard and defended well as a team. Luke Anderson worked well up top and took his two goals well.

“Man of the match for me would be Scott Hellewell. He was solid all game and never lost a header, won every one to one battle and organised the back five well.”

On Saturday, Brigg visit Thackley in the league (kick off 3pm).

Brigg (5-4-1): Barford; Smith, Hellewell, Bowsley (c), Thompson, Fisher; Grimes (Graves 88), Bratten, Dennison, Broughton; Anderson (Parker 90).
