To avoid relegation Brigg needed to defeat Thackley on the last day of the season and hope their rivals lost elsewhere. However, Brigg narrowly lost while Parkgate beat Bridlington Town 3-0 and Armthorpe Welfare drew 2-2 against Garforth Town.
On 4 minutes goalkeeper Dayle Coleing saved a Paul Grimes shot and Lewis Dennison fired the rebound just wide.
Brigg then took the lead after Jerry White tripped Paul Grimes in the box. Grimes picked himself back up to score the resulting penalty.
Brigg kept going with Oliver Fisher forcing Coleing into a good save.
In the second half Brigg continued to play well only for things to go pear shaped in the last few minutes.
In the 88th minute Tom Batchelor conceded a penalty for a foul on Damian Hopkins. Tom Dugdale converted it before Liam Hudson bagged the winning goal with seconds remaining.
Although Brigg were unlucky to lose, they would still have been relegated as other results didn’t go their way.
Brigg joint manager Scott Hellewell was disappointed:
“It was a disappointing day all round for us,” he said.
“We ended on a whimper losing our last game. Other results didn’t go our way so if we won it wouldn’t have been enough to stay up.
“Thanks to the fans from all players and management. We will be looking for some silverware next season and hope to be promoted back to the Premier Division.”
Brigg (4-4-2): Barford (c); Smith, Batchelor, Thompson, Fisher; Broughton (Kelly 70), Lewis, Bratten, Dennison (Hornsey 64); Grimes (Parker 88), Anderson.
