Broncos celebrate 120 years of Rugby League in Bury

When Wigan Wasps FC played in their first Northern Union Cup (now Challenge Cup) tie on 20th March 1897 no-one could have anticipated what was to come of rugby league over the next 120 years of rugby league history, and just how big a part of that Wigan would come to be!

Their opponents on that day were Radcliffe, a smaller amateur club from Bury who would join the Lancashire Senior League over the next few seasons and lost narrowly to a single goal against a Wigan side had just finished in 11th place in that Lancashire Senior league with 8 wins to their name.

Whilst rugby league in Bury has not continued unbroken over since that game, we are very proud to still be playing the sport here and were honoured for some of our junior members to present Wigan legend Kris Radlinski and Salford forward Waller Hauraki with pennants commemorating that game.

Through the upcoming 2017 season such pennants will also be offered to our Wigan based opposition, with teams such as St Cuthberts, St Judes, Bulldogs and Spring View amongst those we’re set to encounter across our age groups.
