Camborne RFC Camborne Rugby

Old Centralians 25 - 15 Camborne

By Jeff Nicholas

Cherry & Whites just come up short after a superb season.

It was a case of unlucky 13 for Camborne when after 12 straight League wins this Play off match in Gloucester was a game to far for the gallant team.

It was not for lack of effort or commitment that this match was lost but on the day nerves played a big part in the defeat. The lads had huge pressure on them in this winner takes all clash as the weight of expectation hung over their heads.
This was not least from the large traveling support of 80+ who made the 410 mile round trip on the coaches and by car from Camborne. There were also supporters who came from as far a field as Guernsey, Nottingham, Southampton, Bristol, Worcester and a few ex-pats from the Gloucester area.
This support was most evident when the team took the field to the sound of almost 100 voices bellowing out 'Camborne Hill'. This took the rest of the near 500 crowd aback as I'm sure they had never witnessed such support for a visiting team before.

For Camborne the line out did not perform, with the visitors winning only a handful of their own throws during the match. This plus not making the most of their first half opportunities, 3 yellow cards and gifting the opposition a 60yrd interception try near the break made things very difficult.
Take nothing away from the home team they played very well and deserved to win on the day. On a pitch which was more akin to Crane Park than the REC (maybe a little more of a slope) the home side certainly knew how to make the most of it.

To say the team were gutted would be an understatement, I can't remember seeing more emotion after a match from a Camborne team, several players were distraught. This meant so much to the whole squad, but they have nothing to reproach themselves for after their 100% committed performance during this match. I think I can speak for all of the the supporters present when I say we are very proud of you guy's and would like to Thank you for giving us one of the best seasons in a couple of decades.

For Camborne it has been a very good season for the whole club, not only reaching the play off but also winning the Cornwall Cup and Merit tables.

The players will now take a much deserved few weeks off, but the hard work is not over for everyone. Coaches and officials will now start the task of making sure as many of this young talented team will be wearing the Cherry & White again next season.
This squad has been painstakingly put together over the last few seasons and all this work can't go to waste. As they have shown in recent months they are a match for anybody at this level and better than most.
The team will only get better and the club will grow stronger as a result, so lets make sure we look after these lads and show them how much they are appreciated.

A match report will follow.
