Camborne fightback in a game of two halves

Match Report from Martin Symons.

Camborne scored a total of twenty one unanswered 2nd half points to secure a bonus point victory over their Devon visitors in front of a large crowd at the Recreation Ground.

‘Town’ welcomed back Alex Ducker and Rhodri Mcatee who both missed the Boxing Day Milk Cup win against Redruth whilst Ashley Riches and veteran Dave Roberts came into the backrow.
Playing down the slope Newton Abbot went ahead with an early penalty but the Cherry & Whites soon opened their account with a well timed Declan Matthews pass creating space for Alex Ducker to speed over in the turnstile corner.
Thereafter the visitors dominated proceedings up to the break and will reflect that although they built up a 20-5 lead they could have been even further in front as further opportunities went astray.
An excellent 19th minute converted effort was followed later by a penalty try awarded with the Camborne pack under pressure at a close range scrum. On the half time whistle an excellent penalty from a wide angle completed the 1st half scoring.

Camborne went up a gear after the break and a length of the field move started by full back Lewis Thomas eventually lead to Ducker sending centre Josh Semmens diving over in the scoreboard corner. Fly half David Mankee landed a well judged conversion and it was game on at 12-20.

The home side trailed by just a solitary point after strong carries from No 8 Roberts and prop Malcolm Hearn on 56 minutes created a good position for winger Ducker to slice through the stretched defence for his 2nd score of the afternoon converted by scrum half Mcatee.
With the visitors tiring the Cherry & Whites went in search of the winning bonus point try hammering the line fruitlessly several times before eventually centre Matthews burst clear to stride over inside the last ten minutes.
Mcatee’s conversion completed the scoring and strong home defence thereafter ensured Newton Abbot finished with only the consolation of a losing bonus point.

Next week the squad travel to Cheltenham where they face basement club Old Patesians who are fighting hard for every point and are a tough nut to crack at the Prince of Wales Stadium. The coaches are well aware this will be a difficult, testing fixture where nothing less than 100% will do if the team are to complete their second double of the season.

Cherry & Whites started this match as though they had a huge Boxing Day hangover and were very slow to settle against a team who are playing for their South West Premier league lives.
The pack looked a shadow of the forwards who outplayed National 2 opposition 10 days before as they struggled against a hungry All Whites 8. The backs too were out of sorts missing a number of first up tackles and allowing the opponents to dominate both territory and possession.

Trailing 5 - 20 at the break it must have been a relief for the coaches to hear the half time whistle so they could get their charges into the changing room to regroup.

Well whatever they said certainly worked because it looked as though a totally different Camborne team came out for the second half. There was a lot more urgency and accuracy in the home teams play as they took the game to Newton Abbot causing them problems from the first minute.

The pack took control at scrum time and carried the ball much better as the error count came right down. The hosts defence was almost water tight and their line speed top drawer as they pressurised the All Whites attack forcing a number of errors. This in turn led to numerous turnovers as the Camborne players piled through driving their rapidly tiring opponents off the ball and setting up counter attacks.

Unanswered tries from Josh Semmens, Alex Ducker and Declan Matthews added to a first half Ducker touch down ensured the Cherry & Whites took maximum points from the game and left the visitors with a deserved losing bonus point.
