Four Injuries in 4 minutes!!

By

A great tournament, but not quite the great performance to go with it though !

A beautiful if cold morning for the Harrow 10s festival.
We started with a 14 man squad but a car park injury to Eddie (trapped finger in door ouch!), a warm up injury to Seb (knee) and Sam S still feeling the effects of a wrist injury from Wednesday's training, immediately depletes our numbers.
The first game in our 5 team round-robin is against Fullerians, a team we would expect to beat, despite the absence of our county representatives. A returning Byron is captain and scrum half for the day. The pitch looks almost square it's so wide, so plenty of space for the runners but hard work for the forwards trying to keep up with the action.
First proper attack goes to Fullerians but thwarted by a strong tackle into touch from Dan. From the restart George is away down the right smashing his way through and popping a classy one-handed pass to Dan in support, who strolls in for the opening score; 5-0 Camelot and looking good. Shortly after the restart Tommy picks up an ankle injury and will play no further part in the game (our 4th injury!). This doesn't affect Dan who pretty much beats the entire opposition to run in his 2nd try of the match down the left side. 10-0 to Camelot.
Fullerians respond well and pressurise our lines but good defence from Julius, George and James causes a knock-on. Unfortunately with the last play of the half Fullerians do pull one back - half time 10-5 Camelot and under control.
Second half underway - big pitch and no subs is looking like hard work and Fullerians start to take advantage of their bigger squad. After a few minutes they score to bring the points level and very frustratingly, break through the middle to score again with the last play. Final score Camelot 10 Fullerians 15. Heads a bit down but an hour to rebuild!

Game 2 versus London Welsh A
This has the makings of a tough game with Camelot carrying injuries and no subs. I won't dwell - the game finishes 45-0 to the opposition. Mr Tackle went missing! Nuff said!

Game 3 V London Welsh B
A brighter start; from our kick off James gets the ball and after a moments hesitation runs away to score, 5-0 to Camelot.
We're playing a bit better in this game, making a few more tackles and winning some rucks. That said it doesn't take long for the opposition to get back into the game - 5-5.
By now there is tiredness on both sides with the format and pitch size taking its toll on stamina; scoring has become pretty easy at both ends. Unfortunately slightly easier for the opposition who take a 5-15 lead into the second half. Highlights of the first half, apart from our try, are Dans tackling and a surging run from Sam B who took a catch from the opposition kick off and ran through two players before being brought down just before he was able to pop a pass to the Rocket who would have been clean through.
The score-fest continues in the second half with George powering through and Woody making the opposition look flat-footed as he skipped past 2 or 3 to score down the left wing. London Welsh also continue to score and by the end of the game it's 15-40 to them. Another tough match made even tougher by two further injuries to Julius and James.
We were due to play Harrow in our 4th and final match of the festival but a good call from the coaches sees the game cancelled; we would have started with 8/9 fit players so to avoid further potential injuries both teams agreed not to play.
A tough morning for our lads, a couple of heavy defeats and plenty of injuries. Character building stuff! We'll bounce back next time, no doubt about that!
