In a topsy-turvy game at Stourton Park, Camps were again thwarted in their pursuit of a first league victory in 2018.

Those still enjoying the end of a very pleasant lunch will have missed the visitors taking the lead as it came in record time. Almost straight from the kick off the ball was kicked forward into the Stourbridge 22,the home full back slipped over and the ever alert Harry Cunningham was able to hack on and score. The successful conversion from Ian Briggs gave the visitors a 7-point lead within the first minute.

Five minutes later a great lineout steal from Halbey gave Camps unexpected possession and when Stourbridge were caught offside Briggsy kicked a long-range penalty for a 10-point lead.

After some more decent possession and a promising run from winger Reece Chapman-Carry, making his first full appearance, Camps conceded a penalty which gave Stourbridge the chance to kick deep into the Camp Hill 22.From the resulting line out the home side’s forwards powered over for a try.

Camps were still looking to use their possession and good work from the half-back combination of Brandon Lea and Dan Robinson gave Chapman-Carry another chance to run at the home defence.

Eventually, however, the ball was intercepted and the Stourbridge winger looked sure to race clear and score. In one of several puzzling decisions the referee stopped play because of an altercation deep in the Stourbridge half. It was only a temporary reprieve, though, as from the scrum that restarted the game, Stourbridge backs took advantage of some indifferent tackling to score a second try in the corner. An excellent conversion from the touchline took them into a two-point lead. Shortly afterwards, Stourbridge added a third try with Camps again able to stop the home backline.

Camps did have the last word of the half when a fine run from flanker Adam Pinfield down the blind side took the ball deep in Stourbridge territory and when a penalty was conceded Briggsy kicked the penalty to end the half.

Camps started the second half with some purposeful carries from the forwards with Will Wallwork and captain Mitch Lee prominent but Stourbridge came back strongly and after some good pressure Camps desperate defence resulted in a yellow card for prop Oz Bolger.
It looked like Camps must concede a try during this period but superb defence highlighted by a try saving tackle from Brandon Lea kept the opposition out.

Having weathered the storm Camps came back into the game and a penalty allowed them to set up their own line out on the opposition 5-metre line. A great take from the returning Mark Newton, a typical forward drive and hooker Adam Willis came up with the score. The successful conversion gave Camps a three-point lead with 10 minutes to go.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and a series of penalties awarded against the visitors gave the Lions the chance to score their fourth try from another close range line out late in the game.

Next weekend we travel to Lutterworth for our first ever league encounter there.

All support is welcome for the 2.15 kick off.
