An ode to Schanta - By Schantas Little Helper

'Twas the game before Christmas, when across Field L’Allingtones
Not a creature was stirring, especially Paul Jones;
The Shirts were hung on the pegs by Al-stair,
In hope 16 players soon would be there;

With Leon & Dempster nestled snug in their beds,
14 came13 as Dougs back turned to red;
But M. Jenks in the 9 shirt and Champs at 13,
The lads had belief in the finest Old Beans,

Straight out on the pitch, Chip arrived with a clatter,
Dom out to Champs, defensive tackles no matter.
Away to the try line he flew like a flash,
Offload to Dunford to touch down with panache. (0-7)

Some slaps on the breast of the ‘marine midfield crew
Not good enough; they came back with two. (10-7)
When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But a fleet footed Rigby post shop with old dear,

With Ginge hitting lines, Parry lively and quick,
Tim knew with Go-Forward that soon it would stick.
More rapid than eagles, Dougies service it came,
Whilst he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Riley! now, Dunford! now, Corp! and Gingell!
On, Larri! More KP! on, Paz! and Angel!
To the 22 line, urged to carry the ball,
Now bash away! bash away! bash away all!"

As crisp handling that leaves defence asking why,
It was whipped out to Corp who touched down for the Try, (10-12)
But back to Chips’ try line, ‘marine boys, they flew,
With smart pattern plays and quick 15 too.

And then came a pounding o’ the Chip-Nam try line,
Relentless scrum pressure; resisting the crime.
So, with a calming heart rate, I was turning around,
Right through the middle, 12 came with a bound. (17-12)

It occurred in a blur, untouched chest down to foot,
As if clothed all in Teflon. Chip tackles Kaput;
No bundle of joy; centres flung on their back,
Chip looked to Ben Riley to energise his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled, set ready to carry!
But faced further wrinkle, an injury to Parry,
“Dig deep for the badge”, a tear pausing Po,
“Lets stop pens. arisin’, be white as the snow”;

One-legged KP took heed through grit teeth,
With stong pick and go, some Hell he unleash;
From the quick ruck, Dougie opted for welly,
Riggs gathered finely, diving in on his belly. (17-17)

Chip back in flow, some jolly old elfs,
And I laughed when I saw it, in spite of myself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
D Bomb cruised through, to Champs, ball was then fed;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Sweet offload to Dougie; the crowd went berserk,
Stepping his way, through red zone he drove,
5 points within sight, o-er whitewash he dove; (17-24)

Neil sprang to his pocket, to Das Hammer gave a whistle,
For high tackle he must go; team respects the official.
And I heard Po exclaim as ‘Nam rode out of sight,
HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!
