Kicking Kieran Says The Day !

This was very nearly a banana skin on the road for Clevedon, the Seasiders started well and squandered two early scoring chances, had a try disallowed and missed two penalty kicks from the usually reliable boot of Kieran Hill. Clevedon were totally dominant, playing with pace and width but lacked the composure to finish. The Seasiders did eventually take the lead with a try from a catch and drive at the lineout by Baise Bosley. Clevedon soon increased their lead with a try by Dean Ashfield who cut through midfield like a knife through butter, Kieran Hill converted for 0-12. A rare visit to the Clevedon half saw Pethy score a converted try after some sloppy Clevedon defence allowed the home side to go straight through the middle. Clevedon increased their lead with a penalty converted by Kieran Hill on the stroke of half time for 7-15.
Playing up the slope in the second half Clevedon started well with man of the match Ben Purcell breaking from the scrum to score near the posts, Kieran Hill added the conversion to take Clevedon into a 7-22 lead. If Clevedon thought that was game over Pethy had other ideas and put Clevedon's defence under extreme pressure, and with a player yellow carded Pethy took a quick tap penalty to score their second try, 12-22. Pethy continued to apply pressure through their heavy forwards and finally Clevedon's defence was bridged again with a converted try to close the score to 19-22. From the restart Pethy were awarded a penalty, they kicked to the corner and from the resulting lineout scored an unconverted try to take the lead 24-22 to the roars of the Pethy crowd. With three minutes left on the clock Clevedon pressed the Pethy defence and were eventually awarded a penalty 35m out to the left hand side and Kieran Hill, under verbal pressure from the opposition and the vocal crowd, drove the ball straight through the uprights to silence the Pethy faithful.
Head Coach Nick Hill commented "This was a very tough win, we created a number of chances and should have had the game sewn up after 20 minutes, but in many ways this did us a favour as we had to show grit and character and played right to the last minute. It has however given us a number of things to work on ahead of the cup final on Thursday"
Next game Thursday April 13th, Somerset Cup Final vs WSM at Western Hornets k.o.7.30 pm
