COGENHOE UNITED v OADBY TOWN
Compton Park

The Cooks look to put the disappointment of losing at home to Rugby Town last weekend behind them as they entertain ninth placed Oadby Town on Saturday afternoon. The Poachers are three places and four points behind the Cooks as we go into this game and aren’t in particularly good form at present, having lost their last three and with just one win in their last six, a 4-1 home success over bottom club Whitworth. Last weekend they failed to recover from a bad start and were soundly beaten 3-0 at home by Eynesbury Rovers, a team in a similar league position to themselves. They have enjoyed a decent enough season though having only just avoided relegation last time around and the introduction of Nick Brett as manager saw him change the entire squad in the summer. We travelled to Freeway Park early in the season and they held us 0-0 in a poor game if truth be told, although both sides had the chances to take the three points.
Our last meeting at Compton Park was back in August 2017 when Cogenhoe had the game wrapped up in the first 20 minutes. Luis Vieira opened the scoring in the first minute and a quickfire double form Nathan Burrows (19 & 20) gave us a 3-0 lead that Oadby had no answer to. Those Cooks scorers have moved on to pastures new since that day and with Oadby having completely rebuilt, only Stuart Lutter, Dan Stevenson, Séan McBride, Liam Tuck, Matt Long and Ryan Ansell are likely to feature from the 30 players on the team-sheets that afternoon.
There is no doubt we were very unlucky to lose last weekend with the game effectively decided by one of the most contentious penalties you will witness this season, but we need to forget about the negativity of losing our ten match unbeaten run and concentrate on starting another one with third spot still very much within our reach if we finish the season with confidence.

FUTURE LIONS UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE-RESERVE DIVISION
WELLINGBOROUGH TOWN Reserves v COGENHOE UNITED Reserves
Dog & Duck Ground
London Road
Wellingborough
3pm.

December’s manager of the month Craig Hayward must be really enjoying life in the hot-seat as his boys look to make it five wins on the trot with the trip down the A45 to face Wellingborough Town at the Dog & Duck. Both sides are in decent form and unbeaten in four, but Cogenhoe have won all theirs whilst scoring 20 and conceding just the one compared to Wellingborough’s won two-drew two. Last weekend they were held to a goalless draw at struggling Potton United while we were 2-0 winners at St Andrews with Jonny Shakespeare and Ben Drinkwater on target. There will be a hint of revenge in the air if we can bring all the points back with us after the Doughboys won a contentious affair under the Compton Park lights back in October. It was similar in some ways to the first team’s defeat last weekend, with a ridiculous penalty award to the visitors, although it did counteract our penalty earlier on when the foul had clearly been outside the box. The Doughboys won 3-2 in the end with Lee Goldsborough’s first half hat-trick (including that penalty) edging out Luke Stone’s spot kick and Drinkwater’s effort early in the second half. To add to the events that evening, Wellingborough used a sub not named on the teamsheet with different people from their club calling him by totally different names. Incidentally they decided not to put any of their subs down on the full-time website but with the current way of doing teamsheets you can now sadly get away with this sort of thing. The frustrations of that evening ended with Jacob Cox and Curtis Avery being suspended for picking up red cards on a day to forget for the Cooks.
