Thursday night at Sphinx Drive had two of the leading teams in the Division meeting and the local derby certainly delivered the goals for the crowd. Former Coventry Sphinx first team manager Robbie Banks was in the Bedworth dugout for this League fixture.
It was frenetic start, as you would expect and the pace in the Bedworth attack was causing Sphinx problems, particularly on the left. Bedworth got through the Sphinx defence a number of times but young shot stopper Kieran Hart was in fine form and produced some excellent saves to keep the Warwickshire visitors out. Sphinx were full of attacking threat themselves and it was Sphinx who drew first blood. A Sphinx corner was the catalyst for the goal and it was a fine header from Owen GORMAN that put them in front. Owen had to generate his own pace on the header and he did just that to guide the ball over the defender on the post. Sphinx soon doubled their advantage and it was another corner that they made count. Max HOWARD took the corner kick and his swinging left footed delivery was too much for the Bedworth keeper and defenders and nestled in the back of the net without any further assistance necessary. Bedworth needed to respond quickly and they did just that with a close range finish just minutes later. We were approaching half time and Sphinx produced the best goal of the game with a fine piece of football. Max Howard broke out of midfield down the left and he fired in a waist height ball across the edge of six yard box. Dan KELLY had made a smart run and he met the ball on the volley and side footed in an exquisite finish to stretch the Sphinx lead to two goals again. Bedworth once again responded and got a goal back on the stroke of half time. Sphinx had the edge going into the break but it was clear there was plenty of work still to do against a useful Bedworth side.
The second half developed into Bedworth having the better of things but Sphinx were able to maintain their lead with a number of shots blocked by a hardworking Sphinx defence. Sphinx maintained their attacking threat when the opportunities arose and the Bedworth keeper did really well to snuff out a one on one opportunity for Dan Kelly. Bedworth would end up paying for not making their possession count with the ever lively T’ahje Smith driving into the Bedworth box and clattering the post with a fierce strike. The alert Alex PEARSON was on hand to pass the ball into the net and that late goal was enough to put the game to bed. Bedworth had given Sphinx a real test tonight and they passed it with the quality of their finishing proving to be the difference.
