Topsham v Dartmouth 31-03-18
The Devon Junior Cup Quarter Final
Topsham RFC 37 – 26 Dartmouth RFC
On a day when a lot of Devon rugby was postponed due to deluge of rain, it was all credit to
the Topsham ground staff for getting the pitch ready and getting the game on.
Dartmouth started the game well and were looking good when they had ball in hand and were
running at the Topsham defence. It was however Topsham which broke through first and
scored the first try on 8 minutes. Dartmouth hit straight back with some quick thinking from
scrum half Jack Clark to score and level at 7-7. Clark himself scoring the conversion. Back
came Topsham almost immediately with another converted try and a warning that they have a
lot of pace out wide if the ball is allowed to travel along the back line. Dartmouth looking
dangerous every time they went through their phases and kept possession scored again on 21
minutes this time through forward Dec Hammond going over the line from a driving maul.
Jack Clark again with the extras made it 14-14. Topsham kicked 2 penalties leading up to half
time and it looked like Dartmouth would go in at the break just 6 points down but Topsham
scored on the stroke of half time which was a huge blow to Dartmouth who went in at the
break 27-14 down.
The second half started well for Dartmouth who were now playing with the wind. A Yellow
card for the Topsham number 7 on 47 minutes gave Dartmouth an advantage for 10 minutes
and they immediately capitalised with Dec Hammond scoring his second of the day and his
8th of the season. Jack Clark scored the conversion to make it 27-21. Dartmouth tried
everything in the next 15 minutes to break down the Topsham defence but they couldn’t find
a way through and eventually on 64 minutes Dartmouth gave away a penalty which Topsham
kicked for the 3 points and also lost player coach Tom Clark for 10 minutes as he was yellow
carded for the incident. With 6 minutes left to play Topsham made the game safe with
another converted try to take the score to 37-21. Dartmouth though just did not give up and
kept pushing forward to the final whistle where flanker Ricky Seymour scored and made the
final score 37-26. Not the score that Dartmouth wanted but they played exceptionally well
against a team that is destined for the Devon and Cornwall league and played their part in a
thoroughly entertaining match.
Dartmouth now have their last league match of the season this Saturday 7th April at home to
Tamar Saracens in a rearranged fixture that has already been postponed 3 times.
