2s carry on their Merry Way

2s stay top!

The undefeated cocks!?

Another great win for Dorking 2’s showed us beat Chertsey, down at Pixham Lane, making us top of the table, writes Wilbur Edwards. The toss was the only thing Chertsey won, putting DCC into bat. Despite the pitch looking like something you’d find in your local park, we had high hopes of posting a large total on the board, following our score of 335 the previous week. However, however the wicket wasn’t good, playing at 2/3 different paces, and which left the openers fighting to survive, whilst trying to keep the runs ticking. With overs being used up quickly, and the run rate beginning to slow, wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Charlie Edwards top scored with 24, whilst other players chipped in around him to see DCC post a score of 122 all out. Way below the score we thought we could post, and we knew we’d have to bowl and field extremely well to win this game. If only Wilbur Edwards had been introduced into the batting line up sooner, rather than at number 11, as he made it clear to all of his team mates, he was “on for tons” this week.

After tea Chertsey felt secure of the win, but where they wrong, very wrong! The tempo was set immediately, with great speeches in the DCC team huddle, which for this week included a guest speaker, Wilbur Edwards. The DCC lads were up for it, and before you knew it Chris Weill and Lee Hardinges brought the heat. Wickets fell continuously, as the visitors struggled, with the two newbies of Chris and Lee bringing the Chertsey top order down. The heat continued with spin bowlers Quinny, and the man of the match, Charlie Edwards who collected 5 wickets for 20 runs, and all this before Francis “Canadian” Chadwick saw the final wicket fall after just 5 balls of his first over. Chertsey all out for 59, and 64 runs short of their target for victory. This was a beating they’ll not forget in a hurry, and a harsh reminder that DCC are seriously strong in the 50/50 format.

Overall, this was a brilliant effort from the cocks in the field, with highlights coming from Will Edwards and Nigel Pestifield, who supported the team throughout the 31.5 overs it had taken us to secure victory, and 20 more points. DCC remain top of the table, and are off to Epsom next week for a Roy Ridgeway style warm up, as led by senior pro, Graheme Cox.
